Cathy gets back to her rural roots

Published: 15 February 2023

Experienced midwife Cathy Hewitt has spent 20 years guiding parents through pre-and-post natal care at Townsville University Hospital (TUH).

But for the 10 years prior to TUH, Cathy was working in Cloncurry and has never lost her spark for rural healthcare.

Now, Cathy has joined the midwifery team at Charters Towers Health Service and isn’t looking back.

“I do really enjoy working in a rural setting and wanted to get back to rural nursing and midwifery without moving too far away from the coast,” Cathy said.

“It’s a real privilege to be part of a family’s journey to parenthood, whether it’s for the first time or not, and having the opportunity to get to know them during such a special time in their lives.

“I also love being able to provide support and lend my expertise to the team at Charters Towers.”

Cathy will be splitting her time between Charters Towers and Townsville, visiting the coast regularly.

“My family still live in Townsville, so I will come back every second weekend,” she said.

“But my best advice for anyone considering going rural for work was to just give it a try.

“I think a lot of people would be really surprised about how pleasant it is to work in a rural hospital.

“It’s really worth giving it a go if you’re ever given the opportunity.”
