New health workers support Indigenous patients

Published: 25 March 2020

First nations people receiving treatment at the Townsville University Hospital’s renal unit are being greeted by two new friendly faces, with the health service welcoming its first Indigenous Health Workers to the unit.

John Body-Dempsey and Raylene Dean, who started as Indigenous Health Workers in February this year, said in addition to providing clinical support their role was about creating a welcoming environment for Indigenous patients.

“There are a lot of emotional barriers to Indigenous people coming to hospital like shame and fear of not knowing where to go or what to expect,” John said.

“When an Indigenous person sees another Indigenous person it gives them that bit of warmth and comfort, they enjoy having a yarn and are more likely to talk about personal things.”

“Having a familiar face creates a more safe and productive environment for our patients who can feel a bit more relaxed knowing that we’re there to support them,” Raylene added.

Raylene said the role also provided important support to staff.

“Cultural support is not just for the patients but also for the staff,” she said.

“When we’re taking a patient’s blood pressure or supporting the nursing staff, Indigenous patients will often feel more comfortable disclosing any concerns with us.

“We can then advocate for the patient and alert staff to issues happening in the background that may be affecting our patient.”

John said the unit was working hard to ensure it was welcoming to Indigenous patients.

“As well as just being available to support our patients in person, we are looking at programs to help better support our Indigenous patients, particularly those from remote communities, and including Indigenous artwork and murals to make the physical environment more welcoming,” he said.

“We are hoping that by giving them a familiar, comforting face it gives more confidence to come back and continue to receive care.”

The Indigenous health workers will work closely with the Townsville University Hospital’s Indigenous hospital liaison officers.
