Angus Smith Drive diversion
Published: 05 August 2024
Entry to Townsville University Hospital from Angus Smith Drive has been temporarily diverted as works progress on the $530 million hospital expansion.
This work is important to the early stages to deliver a 143-bed clinical building at the site of the current helipad and is a pivotal step in building the future of healthcare for north Queensland.
Will entry into the hospital still be accessible from Angus Smith Drive?
Yes – the diversion will see traffic controllers divert cars to a newly created two-lane side road once they have entered the hospital grounds from Angus Smith Drive.
Will it take longer to get into the hospital?
Two lanes of traffic will be maintained, but traffic may be slowed during this period. Please allow for additional time to arrive at hospital in peak times.
Is there an alternative entry point to the hospital?
Staff, visitors, and patients may also enter the hospital grounds from Discovery Drive.
Will there be any changes to bus or taxi drop-off points?
No – the bus stop location and taxi drop-off point remain the same.
What should people riding bicycles or e-scooters do?
Bicycle and e-scooter users will be encouraged to dismount and use the pedestrian footpath past the charity houses. They can use the two-lane diversion along Angus Smith Drive if necessary.
How long will the diversion be in place?
Until late September.
