Support services
Pastoral care
The pastoral care team consists of representatives from various religious groups from around Townsville. Pastoral care workers visit patients and/or their families who need advice, guidance or support. The pastoral care team will help and support anyone, regardless of their beliefs. Pastoral care representatives provide an on-call service, 24-hours a day, seven days a week. They are available to provide assistance and support to you whenever you need it. Bookings are essential. All bookings are to be made in advance from this office during business hours only. Reception is open during the hours of:
- 7am-7pm (Monday - Friday)
- 4pm-7pm for check in (Saturday and Sunday)
- 7am-9am for check out (Saturday and Sunday)
Accommodation at this centre consists of a low-set building with disability access, located on the grounds of the Townsville University Hospital. Each bedroom is equipped with a fan and air-conditioner, two single beds, and trundle beds are also available. All rooms have an ensuite, except for four rooms which have a bathroom between two rooms.
Room allocation is dependent on availability. Shared facilities are available for use by all guests staying at the centre, which includes a lounge room, kitchen, dining room and laundry. All linen is provided; however, food and beverages are the responsibility of the guest. Parking is available on site, outside the front of the building.
How much does it cost?
Contact the Red Cross for the current costs. Children and family rates are also available. Payment of accommodation is the responsibility of the guest.
If accommodation costs are approved under the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme by the originating hospital, a confirmation notice is to be received from the originating hospital as well as a signed “Section D” form from the guest prior to check out.
Where Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme coverage has not been authorised, the guest will be required to pay for their accommodation, and seek reimbursement from the originating hospital.
Eligibility
All persons staying at this centre are required to demonstrate a need to access health services or attend another person who is accessing health services.
This centre is not a medical facility, and staff are not trained in patient management. It is, therefore, necessary for guests to be capable of independent self-care or to be accompanied by a carer or escort. This requirement also applies to a person who is confused or disoriented.

Queensland Freemasons Village is a 10-unit complex built amid landscaped gardens adjacent to the Townsville University Hospital. Within the centre, covered walkways provide easy access to the comfortable two-bedroom, fully self-contained units. Located at ground level with private courtyards, are six units, while the remaining four units are located upstairs with large balconies. The Village is also equipped with a children's playground, a gym and spa, auditorium, and a car park. Residents have full access to the common room with tea/coffee making facilities, TV, library and board games. The room opens onto a barbeque area. Caring support staff meet the needs of patients and their families.
How much does it cost?
Patients and their families and carers can stay at Leukaemia Foundation's accommodation at no cost. In some cases, it may be possible for the Foundation to receive financial assistance from the government under the Patient Transit Subsidy Scheme, or a similar scheme. These schemes also may assist patients with their travel costs to and from Townsville.

Ronald McDonald House provides accommodation for families of seriously ill children. The House is a community living facility with well-equipped common areas including a modern kitchen, laundries, and children’s playroom, lounge room and a well-stocked library.
We open our doors to any family whose child or baby is undergoing medical treatment at the Townsville University Hospital. Ronald McDonald House gives families the opportunity to stay together as a unit to support their sick child and also offers parents/guardians the chance to draw hope, compassion and comfort from other families in similar situations.
How much does it cost?
There is no means test for families to stay at Ronald McDonald House. Through the Queensland Government Patient Transfer Subsidy Scheme, parents/guardians may qualify for an accommodation subsidy while staying at Ronald McDonald House and should contact their local hospital for details.
What facilities are provided?
There are 26 rooms, five of which are fully self-contained units. All the rooms are fully air-conditioned, with a patio and ensuite. Guests are provided with linen, television and ample cupboard space. Cots, baby baths, and extra items are provided on request. A 24-hour on-site staff presence is provided for the safety of guests and to attend to any after-hours guest needs.
The House is surrounded by a large lawn where children can run around as well as play on the play equipment. BBQ facilities are also available.
What do you need to bring?
Very little… everything from towels to sheets is provided. Food is also provided in the house and corporate and community groups together with volunteers regularly cook meals for families to enjoy.
