Private and Public Patients
If you are Medicare eligible and hold current private hospital insurance when admitted to a Queensland public hospital you can elect to be a private inpatient.
In the event you choose to be admitted as a private patient:
- The Townsville HHS will cover any excess or co-payment for a single room
- You will have no out-of-pocket expenses for hospital accommodation fees, theatre fees, diagnostic services, prostheses, pathology and pharmaceuticals (not including discharge medications)
- You may request a single room. While this is provided where possible, single rooms are allocated on a clinical-needs basis
- You can choose your staff specialist and treating team provided they have a Right of Private Practice at the hospital. If the staff specialist of your choice is unavailable, you can choose to be treated by an on-call hospital specialist
Billing information
Queensland Health supports ‘hassle-free’ billing. If you have private health insurance and have elected to be a private patient, your account will be prepared and, in most cases, directly submitted to Medicare Australia and your health fund on your behalf.
