Psychology
The Department of Psychology provides psychological services to patients of the Townsville Hospital and Health Service. Our services are provided for patients staying in hospital, as well as those in our care through our community and mental health services.
Services
Psychologists engage in:
- Education, consultation, and information provision
- Evidence-based individual, family, or group-based therapeutic interventions
- Formulation, (developing a shared understanding about the behaviour(s) or situation)
- Psychological assessment
- Psychological therapies
- Interventions to assist with treatment adherence
- Management of specific treatment issues such as needle phobias or medically unexplained symptoms; for example, medically-unexplained chest pain
- Management of paediatric and chronic disease specific issues
- Program development and evaluation
- Psychological assessment and capacity assessments
Psychologists in the Townsville Hospital and Health Service work in a number of areas such as:
- Acute care settings (for example, inpatient wards)
- Child development service
- Child, youth and family health
- Cochlear implant
- Community health

Referral Process
The following referral sources are valid for both inpatients and outpatients:
- Allied Health Professionals
- General Practitioners
- Medical staff
- Nursing staff
- Self-referrals
