Sod turned on Kirwan Health Campus expansion

The $40 million expansion of the Kirwan Community Health Campus has begun with ground officially broken this week by Minister for Health, Mental Health and Ambulance Services and Minister for Women Shannon Fentiman.

The project will see St Hilliers build a new two-storey building and undertake a small refurbishment of the existing facility to provide expanded maternity and oral health services for the north Queensland community.

Minister Fentiman officially turned the sod today and said the occasion marked an important milestone in the delivery of more than $600 million worth of announced capital works projects for the Townsville Hospital and Health Service.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service Board Chair Tony Mooney said the expansion of the Kirwan Community Health Campus would support the growing demand in the region.

“We are experiencing growth in our population and seeing more people accessing health care locally and this expansion will ensure we have the capability to expand our services,” he said.

“Our midwifery group practice facilitates nearly 10,000 appointments from the Kirwan Health Campus and, once the expansion is complete, we predict nearly 600 women will be offered appointments from Kirwan with a known midwife.

“The oral health services team treats more than 13,300 patients at Kirwan in a year and close to 40,000 across the who health service catchment.”

“The addition of a new two-storey building at the Kirwan campus will allow us to expand our outpatient pre- and post-natal care and our oral health services.

“This means our staff can continue delivering exceptional health care in a modern space that is fit for purpose.”
