Townsville residents urged to take precautions against dengue

Published: 12 March 2025

Townsville Hospital and Health Service has warned the community to prepare themselves and their homes against dengue fever.

The warning comes after sustained transmission of the disease with six probable cases of dengue reported in two houses in North Ward.

Public Health Unit director Dr Steven Donohue said they have started a full-scale dengue outbreak response.

“Teams from Townsville HHS and Townsville City Council are talking to residents in nearby home in North Ward to warn them of the dengue outbreak as well as inspect their properties and carry out any mosquito-mitigation activities,” Dr Donohue said.

“It is important for residents to take dengue precautions.

“These mosquitoes are very quiet, they’re sneaky, they hide in and around your house, you won’t see them most of the time and they bite you mostly on your legs, during the day.

“Therefore, it’s really important to tip out anything that’s holding water around your house. They’ll breed in junk, tyres, pot plant bases. Tip those out. Have a dry yard as much as possible.

“Make sure to spray dark, damp hiding places inside your house. Use surface spray or long-acting insecticide – under the sink, in the bathroom or the laundry, all of those hiding places. That’s a great way to get rid of these mosquitoes.”

Dr Donohue said it was important for anyone who was feeling unwell to see a doctor.

Be aware of the typical signs and symptoms of dengue fever. They could include:

  • Sudden onset of fever and extreme tiredness.
  • Intense headache.
  • Muscle and joint pain.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and a metallic taste.
  • A flushed or red rash.
